Over time, your teeth can get damaged. This can happen for a variety of reasons, like tooth decay, injuries or just use over time. Your teeth can lose their shape or size. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that can be placed over your tooth. Think of it as a snug hat for your tooth. The crown restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.

The dental crown is cemented into place on your tooth and it covers the visible portion of the tooth.

Who needs Dental Crowns?

If you have a large cavity that’s too big for a filling, it may be time for a crown.

You may also need a crown if your tooth is:

  • severely worn down
  • cracked
  • weakened

Crowns are also recommended following a root canal on a tooth because the tooth is more fragile and needs protection.

You may be a candidate for a crown if you’re missing a tooth, and the dentist needs to put in a dental bridge or a tooth implant.

Types of Dental Crowns

Gold crowns

Gold crowns are in fact a combination of copper and other metals, such as nickel or chromium. The main advantage of gold crowns is their strength and durability.

For back restorations -and depending on each patient’s needs- some dentists may suggest a gold crown as the preferred option. However, gold crowns don’t make a very popular choice today due to their color and aesthetics.

ADVANTAGES of gold crowns:

  • They are strong and highly resistant
  • They last a long time if properly cared for
  • Less proportion of your natural tooth needs to be removed
  • They wear down quite slowly, just like natural enamel
  • They are ideal for posterior restorations (back teeth), especially second molars

Porcelain Fused-to-Metal Crowns (PFM)

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns are another widely used type of dental crown. They provide both strength (due to their metal structure) and aesthetics (due to the porcelain coat that covers the cap).

ADVANTAGES of PFM crowns are:

  • They provide great aesthetics and durability
  • They’ve been around for over 50 years. We know they work well.
  • They are less costly than all-porcelain crowns.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconium is a relatively new material that combines the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain crowns.  High translucent zirconia and layered zirconia crowns have become a more popular choice lately.

ADVANTAGES of zirconia crowns are:

  • They provide great aesthetics
  • They are strong and long-lasting (less possibilities of chipping or breaking).
  • The process can be less time consuming because zirconia can be cut and shaped at the same dental office. There’s no need to send them over to a dental lab.
  • Zirconia Crowns are less likely to wear down due to their strength.
  • They are biocompatible: as metal free crowns, they are not likely to cause allergic reactions.

E- MAX: Lithium Disilicate Crowns

The newest type of crown in dentistry today is known as E -Max. It is a type of all-ceramic crown made of lithium disilicate (which is also light and thin).

ADVANTAGES of E-max crowns are:

  • Great aesthetics. They look great in your mouth.
  • They can be durable and very strong.
  • They provide a great choice both for front and back teeth.

Myth 1

Myth

Dental Crowns Are Artificial, Therefore They Can’t Crack

Fact
Although they are made of durable and long-lasting material, teeth crowns can break. Biting hard objects or using your teeth to open stuff or bite your nails can weaken your toot caps and cause them to break.

Myth 2

Myth

Dental Crowns Have an Unnatural Look

Fact
Contrary to a popular belief, teeth crowns look natural and resemble your natural teeth in appearance and function. Before application, our dentist in Richmond St. West will choose a shade that closely resembles your natural teeth color.

Myth 3

Myth

Fixing Dental Crowns is a Lengthy Process

Fact
On average, the dental crowns need two dental visits and it takes around three weeks to get them fixed. The dentist may recommend a follow-up appointment to check how well the gums are tolerating the crowns.

Myth 4

Myth

Dental Crowns Can’t Discolor

Fact
As aforementioned, dental crowns resemble your natural teeth. That means they too can discolour when exposed to staining beverages like coffee and tea. Unfortunately, when the crowns stain and discolour, you can’t whiten them as you would the natural teeth

Myth 5

Myth

Teeth Crowns Are Available in One Type

Fact
Porcelain dental crowns are the commonly used teeth caps, but they are not the only type available. You can choose metal, ceramic, resin, or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns.

How long do Dental Crowns last?

On average, dental crowns last between five and 15 years. The life space of a crown can depend on the amount of “wear and tear” the crown is exposed to, how well you follow oral hygiene practices and personal mouth-related habits. These mouth-related habits can include things like:

  • Grinding or clenching your teeth.
  • Chewing ice.
  • Biting your fingernails.
  • Using your teeth to open packaging.
